In fact, according to the same sources, the blessed Metropolitan of Langadas Ioannis had mild symptoms a few days ago but did not arrange for his transport to a hospital in time, which may have further aggravated his health condition. Despite the efforts of doctors and nurses to keep him alive, the hierarch’s condition worsened, he developed a Covid-19 respiratory infection and ended up with a cardiorespiratory arrest.
“This morning, at the age of 62, the most respected metropolitan of Langadas, Litis and Rentinis, Mr. Ioannis, passed away, after a battle with the new coronavirus. The blessed metropolitan of Langadas, Litis and Rentinis, according to Ioannis Tassias, had tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus and was hospitalized from Friday, November 13, 2020 at the Covid-19 clinic, at the Papageorgiou General Hospital in Thessaloniki, said in yesterday’s announcement of Papageorgiou Hospital.
The metropolitan had participated in the doxology of October 26 in Saint Dimitrios of Thessaloniki, as well as several hierarchs, among them the metropolitan Ierissos Theoklitos who tested positive for the coronavirus. Meanwhile, the participation of the blessed hierarch in the recent meeting of the Holy Synod raises concerns within the Church, as the deceased – not knowing that he is ill with Covid-19 – came in contact with other metropolitans.
The Deputy Minister of Macedonia – Thrace, Theodoros Karaoglou, also expressed his sorrow for the loss of the Metropolitan, emphasizing that he lost “a friend”, a hierarch with whom he had excellent cooperation.
“Under his inspired guidance, the Diocese of Langada, Litis and Rentinis was a bright point of reference, leaving an indelible mark on its progress and prosperity. We will remember him with feelings of love, respect and deep appreciation “.
For his part, Stavros Anagnostopoulos, mayor of Chalkidona, where the blessed metropolitan came from, said that it is an hour of mourning and great sorrow for the place, noting that the deceased is a special example of an enlightened and humble hierarch, with a significant contribution to people.
“The blessed hierarch was a tireless worker of Orthodoxy and served with devotion the local church, leaving important pastoral, spiritual and social work. He will be in our hearts forever and we will remember him with love and respect. “His memory is eternal,” he said.
