ELSTAT – Greece: 8.32% Reduction of Deaths the First 8 Weeks of 2021 Compared to the Same Period of 2020

Deaths in Greece decreased by 8.32% during the first 8 weeks of 2021 (4/1/2021- 28/2/2021) and amounted to 20,538 (10,537 men and 10,001 women) compared to 22,402 ( 11,192 men and 11,210 women) deaths in the corresponding 8 weeks of 2020.

According to ELSTAT (Hellenic Statistical Authority), most deaths were recorded on the 8th week (22/2- 28/2/2021) with an increase rate of 7.9%, while the fewest deaths were recorded in the 5th week (1/2 – 7/2/2021) with a reduction rate of 16.6%. The 2nd week (11/1- 17/1/2021) were recorded a reduction rate of 14.9% and on the 6th week (8/2/2021- 14/2/2021) a reduction rate of 13.8 %.

Per age group it is observed that the deaths were lower, in absolute terms, mainly in the age groups 85 to 89 years (626 deaths), 80 to 84 years (461 deaths) and 90 and over years (402 deaths), while most were mainly in the age group 60 to 64 years old (20 deaths).
