Based on General Secretariat for Civil Protection data presented during this week’s Covid-19 briefing by Deputy Crisis Management Minister Nikos Hardalias, for the July 1- August 16 period – when Greece opened to travel – the largest number of positive coronavirus infections were in found in travelers from Romania (88), Bulgaria (86), Serbia (80), Albania (63), and Sweden (29), most of whom entered Greece through its land border points.

According to the same data, in the July 1-August 16 period, 364 people through the country’s airports tested positive for Covid-19, 17 at the ports, and 234 through land borders.

Overall in the period under examination, a total of 2,592,853 people have entered Greece.

The country’s three regions accounting for the most positive cases were Attica (which includes Athens and Piraeus) with 158 cases in the same period, Central Macedonia (which includes Thessaloniki and the open-to-travelers border points) with 143, and the South Aegean Region (which includes the popular islands of Rhodes, Mykonos, and Santorini) with 77.

Citing current data, Hardalias underlined that 83 percent of Greece’s confirmed Covid-19 cases were domestic due to lax observation of hygiene measures and only 17 percent “imported” from travelers.

On Wednesday, according to Greece’s National Public Health Organization (EODY), 269 Covid-19 cases were recorded, 98 of which in Attica.
