The Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Adil Karaismailoğlu stated: “We have expanded the area of responsibility for search and rescue in our Blue Country”, even publishing the corresponding maps.
Tayyip Erdogan’s regime, in the name of the “Blue Country”, extends the area where Turkey has search and rescue rights, from Karpathos to Cyprus, ignoring everyone.
Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismailoğlu said: “We have expanded the search and rescue responsibility area in our Blue Country to include the search areas of our national ships operating in the Eastern Mediterranean. Good luck to our country in the new National Search and Rescue Plan.”
The Turkish Minister’s announcement
“Greetings to Fatih, Gavouz and Kunduz. We have expanded our search and rescue responsibility area in our Blue Country, in a way that includes our active in searches in Eastern Mediterranean national ships.
Let the new National Search and Rescue Plan be a joy for our country,” said the Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismaeloglou.
Immediate was Greece’s response with a Foreign Ministry announcement in which it spoke of illegal definition explaining in detail the Greek positions.
“It is clear that Turkey, with this latest move which is purely politically motivated, does not hesitate to cause confusion, endangering human lives,” the statement added.
“The Turkish area of search and rescue responsibility arbitrarily defined by the new Turkish law, like the one defined by the Turkish law of 1988, is illegal in so far as it overlaps areas of Greek sovereignty and jurisdiction, so it does not produce legal effects. Moreover, however, it is not based on operational criteria and does not serve the purposes of the safety of human life.
The Greek area of responsibility, defined in the 1950s by ICAO Air Navigation Agreements and declared since 1975 to the competent International Maritime Organisation (IMO), coincides with the FIR Athens and complies with the recommendations of the IMO and ICAO, as included in the International Manual for Aeronautics and Maritime Search and Rescue (IAMSAR Manual). It is underlined that in practice Greece, through the competent Greek Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) in Piraeus, effectively coordinates all search and rescue operations in its area of responsibility, in this case providing services to all ships and planes at risk.
It is clear that Turkey, with this latest move which is purely politically motivated, does not hesitate to cause confusion, endangering human lives. This move is in addition to the long list of Turkish arbitrariness and illegal claims in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean, which are also responsible for the unprecedented escalation of the last period. Turkish actions will once again run counter to the international legitimacy with which Turkey will finally have to come to terms,” the statement says in detail.
The Erdogan Law
A new law signed by Erdogan was published in the Turkish government newspaper as reported by SKAI.
It concerns many details of Turkey’s search and rescue, it changes some ministerial responsibilities, but it also concerns Greece because there are all the coordinates for search and rescue from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean and there is the change mentioned in a particular paragraph and it is also the relevant map published by Turkey’s transport minister. It states that: “The Turkish search and rescue area includes the areas within limits that include the maritime areas, the islands of our country, the continental country and the waters that exist in the country.”
However, there is also the relevant map showing the areas that Turkey considers to be in charge of search and rescue, the difference with Turkey’s previous views is that it adds some areas and completes the Blue Country theory. It adds areas east of Crete and west of Rhodes, west of Karpathos and according to Turkish theory if a ship has a problem 8 or 9 miles from Crete the search and rescue authority is in Turkey’s hands.
Two moves that show that it’s not just search and rescue, it’s drilling.
