Red Cross: The Covid Vaccines Wipes Out The Antibodies You Have If You Have Recovered From Covid (Video)

If you’ve gotten your COVID-19 vaccine, the Red Cross says you cannot donate convalescent plasma to help other COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

Convalescent plasma is made up of antibodies from people who have recovered from the virus. The vaccine wipes out those antibodies which makes the convalescent plasma ineffective in treating other COVID-19 patients.

“If you haven’t been vaccinated and you’ve recently recovered from COVID-19, you can donate blood at one of our blood drives. We test all blood donations for COVID antibodies, if you know ahead of time you’ve recently recovered, your results will show up positive, we’ll be able to pull the plasma from that whole blood donation, that’ll go directly to one of the hospitals locally to a patient,” said Joe Zydolo with the Red Cross.

The Red Cross says whole blood donations are still critically important. Whether you’ve received your vaccine or not, you can donate blood to those in need.
