Coronavirus spread in France reaches All Time High: More than 40,000 cases in one day

Popular

French health authorities have announced 41,622 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the absolute daily record to date.

The sad record came shortly after the government announced the extension of a curfew imposed a week ago in Paris and other major cities.

The death toll from Covid-19 in France has risen by 162 to 34,210, bringing the total to 999,043.

More than 2 in 3 French people will have to stay at home overnight, from next Saturday, due to the extension of the curfew in a large part of French territory, in the context of the fight against the second wave of the new coronavirus, announced today the Prime Minister Jean Castex.

The lives of 46 million French people will now be affected by the curfew, from 9pm to 6am.

“The coming weeks will be tough and our hospital services will be tested hard,” warned the head of the French government, who expects November to be “difficult” and the death toll to “continue to rise”.

To date, the curfew has affected 20 million French people, especially in major cities, including Paris and the wider region.

The extension of the measure will take effect at midnight on Friday to Saturday and will last 6 weeks.

This means, among other things, that bars, restaurants, shops in the affected areas should close at 21.00.

Following a first wave of more than 30,000 deaths in the spring, France has been facing a second wave of the new coronavirus epidemic for weeks.

In total, the country has more than 34,000 deaths from Covid-19 and 2,239 patients are in mechanical support or ICUs, a higher number than in May.

“If we do not join our forces to contain the epidemic, we will be in a dramatic situation and we will have to look at much tougher measures,” explained Jean Castex.

“We still have time to avoid this, but we do not have much time,” he said.

France is not the only country affected by the resurgence of the epidemic.

“All of Europe is on fire,” Health Minister Olivier Veran told the French National Assembly today, citing the Czech Republic, Britain, Wales, Ireland and Germany.
