Up to 4 weeks of national lockdown seems to have been decided and will be announced today at 12:00 noon by the prime minister. The movements with SMS, the data for the schools and the “padlock” in commercial stores. What will remain open.

The country is heading towards a national lockdown and repetition of what we experienced in March and April, as Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilias stated earlier.

According to the Minister of Health, this is the proposal of the committee of health experts, but the final decisions will be taken by the Prime Minister and will be announced at 12 noon on Thursday, 04.11.2020. Next to Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be Sotiris Tsiodras and both of them will answer questions from journalists, with this way depicting the criticality of the situation which shows that the national lockdown is now inevitable.

How we came to the decision for national lockdown

The exponential increase in covid-19 cases across the country, despite the measures taken mainly in the last 15 days and the ever-increasing pressure on the health system, with the rapid increase in the number of intubated ICUs, are leading experts and the government in this direction. In fact, while initially there was a proposal for a Thessaloniki-type lockdown only in Attica, in the end the logic of a total lockdown was chosen in order to stop the spread of the virus.

According to information from government information, the lockdown will last from 2 to 4 weeks – with a more probable version of 3 weeks – and will start at 6 on Saturday morning, while it will have the characteristics of what has been implemented in Thessaloniki. Thus, the movements will be made for specific reasons with the SMS as in last March and April, while from 9 pm to 5 am the next day the traffic will be allowed only for the employees and for reasons of health or emergency. All commercial stores will be closed except for supermarkets and grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, etc., just like in the lockdown of the first wave.

The only difference between March and April will be that the schools will remain open – at least those of pre-school and primary education (kindergartens, primary schools). The recommendation of the committee of experts, according to information, provides for the closure of the Gymnasiums and not only the Lyceums, however no final decisions have been made yet. Based on the data, covid-19 cases exist mainly in the ages of 15-17 – that is, in the Lyceums – and these do not come from the communication and interaction in the schools.

Earlier, a government source stated that “in recent days, despite the measures taken, we are seeing an exponential increase in cases across the country. This is an alarm signal because we know there will be more pressure on the health system. That is why, as in the previous phase, all necessary measures must be taken to stop the pandemic. We can not wait to see the problem coming. The situation is assessed daily, the measures are being studied and will be announced by the prime minister, after the suggestions of the experts “.
